DAVE WILLOUGHBY

Sadly Dave passed away on Saturday 3 July 2010 and will be greatly missed both within the volleyball community and especially here in Portsmouth Volleyball Club. He had embraced our sitting team and taken on their coaching and with his enthusiam for the game and people. Our thoughts are with Sue and the rest of his family at this time.
His funeral will take place at Porchester Crematorium (PO18 8NE) Tuesday 20 July at 3.30pm, at Sue's request all volleyball people wear their tracksuits for this occasion and everybody else IS NOT to wear black', and no flowers. Any monetary contributions received will go to the Portsmouth Sitting Team funds.
Ladies 1 - With the match against Devon won the Ladies 1 team have now won the Division 2 title - with only 1 loss (against Devon !!!). Picture is the team after winning the match:

Portsmouth County Council - The Councils Recreation Policy & Development Officer "Simon Lindsey" has just provided out sitting section players with 6 new balls. This is most welcome, especially being newly formed and doing very well in the Great Britain Sitting Volleyball community, as can be seen from the following link: http://www.volleyballengland.org/National_Cups/sitting-grand-prix-series.php

Sitting Volleyball - (29 Nov 2009) Our sitting team took part in the Sevenoaks Competition - (actually submitting 2 individual teams) - but WON the outright competition on our first attempt at any compettition. The final was a hard fought game and did not start well for the Portsmouth team (going 7 points behind early on) but they fought hard and gained alot of confidence and became the winners at their first ever event. (they will now be a marked team who people want to beat !)
Sitting Volleyabll - with effect Thursday 15th October the club will have a sitting volleyball section starting at Mary Rose School. Gisors Road, Southsea PO4 8GT between 6 - 8 pm
The club's sitting section has already been nominated as a 'Volleyball Sitting Centre' for the south of England by Volleyball England.
FIVB Coaching Course - Head Coach Jayne Sharpe attended the FIVB Coaching Course in Norwich over the summer, all part of the scolarship coach development. The course content was invaluable and hard, however Jayne passed and is now a qualified International Coach.
Club Equipment - The club has welcomed a donation from Volleyball England of 7 complete outdoor volleyball net systems and 15 outdoor balls, from the beach legacy competition. These will be a great use in the coming years with the growth of the club and the outdoors. The club have also gained 12 indoor volleyballs from the MIKASA sponsorship which are to be used for the new season.

Referee Course - over last weekend 26/26th April there was a ref's course held at HMS Collingwood, Hants taught by Stuart Dunne. Jack Smith one of our junior members took the course and passed - so now is a fully qualified ref, and no doubt will want to do some matches as soon as possible. (Photo from Ashcombe Tournament where he started to Ref - Now he is qualified to do so)

Gunwharf Quays have generously donated £200 to the Club for new balls. It is hoped that the club can continue to liaise with Gunwharf Management and participate with any future Volleyball events that they hold. The Urban Beach Tour this year was a great success in advertising Volleyball to the community.

Beach Courts - Southsea

On the weekend 20/21st September Portsmouth Volleyball Club and others from the Portsmouth region played at the new Beach Courts which have been provided for by Portsmouth City Council. The venue was an unused 'Bowls Green' which has now been put to good use, especially for all the volleyball clubs within the area. The weekend was brilliant with fabulous weather and no cloud, all players really enjoyed the venue. There was alot of interest from people passing by and we even got a few to come onto the area and play for a while with the children. It is hoped now that a summer league and tournaments can commence next year.(MORE PHOTOS ARE ON THE GALLERY &/OR THE FACEBOOK 'Beach Volleyball Courts, Southsea')

East Hants Volleyball Tournament
13 July 2008
The club entered a team into this competition which was held in Bordon. The morning session comprised of three games in which we won them all, after lunch we were placed into the top pool where we played another three games only loosing the last match against InterPol. This left us second in the pool which took us into the semi-final where we faced the winner of the other pool, unfortunately our setter Marla Baldwin had to leave early 'for a dinner date' which left us one player short. Therefore we would like to thank Dave Fowler from 'The drinking team' who stepped in and made up six players again, however this did not prevent us from loosing the semi-final. Even though we don't blame Dave for the team loosing - some of the spectators did (meaning his own team).
It was an extremely well run tournament with lots of matches and perfect weather, BBQ on hand and a bar!, well done East Hants club - looking forward to next year. On the Gallery section of our site are some photos of the day - and check out the new mens shorts for our beach venture.

Ashcombe Tournament
21/22 June 2008
JUNIORS
For the first time we entered a junior team under Portsmouth banner - these were the newly formed under 14 boys team, they have only been training for a few weeks, and had never played together - so it was never going to be easy.
The lads turned up at Ashcombe on Saturday morning, not knowing what standard they will be playing against, but were able to gain valuable knowledge of what is needed to play against other teams. The team consisted of Raymond Chandler, Jack Smith, Luke Chandler and Danny ....
They had 4 pool games and although they did not win any of these games, the way they improved from the first game to the last was quite easy for everyone to see. They played the last game which was for 4th/5th place and by now the long day had taken its toll and the lads were quite tired, but they tried their best and never gave up. They now know what they have to do to win matches and that all comes down to training hard and build on the team work.
Coach Jayne Sharpe was very proud of them and has since been told by the national head office that they were very pleased to see the new Portsmouth team competing and commented on the fact that although the results did not go their way, they never stopped smiling.
LADIES
This was again the first time Portsmouth had entered a ladies team at Ashcombe and like the men it was an early start for the team as their first match was at 10am.
Although the sun was out for the whole day, the wind was very strong and some of the team struggled to keep their serves in court. Playing in the top diovision, and with another team pulling out at the last minute, only 3 teams competed and everyone played each other twice.
The first game against Dynamo Dykes was closly fught but Portsmouth lost the game due to poor serving. The second game saw a much better game beating Ealing, but the following games saw two more losses which put us 3rd. It was a disappointing result but on reflecti0on both the other teams regularly play outdoors, so the result was probably fair. The team consisted of Jayne Sharpe, Vanessa Lucas, Emma Hopping, Veronika Lute, Celine Guitteny and Silvia Sachsenhause.
MEN
This was only the second turnament for the men's team and their first at Ashcombe. It was an early start for them as their first match was at 10am.
Although the sun was out for the day, the wind was very strong and all the teams that day struggled to keep the play going. They played 4 pool matches, winning 2, draw 1 and lost 1, but these results gave them 2nd place in the division by just one point.
The men then played against Tavistock in the final, which was the team they lost to in the pool match, it was a very good match. Portsmouth taking the first set 25-17 and Tavistock winning the second 25-18, taking them to a third set. Tavistock were leading at 8-6 but Portsmouth pulled out some great blocking and cover and they took the set 15-9.
The team consisted of Ross Franklin, Rob Attwood, Robert Sussspeck, Thorsen Grothe, Woitek Tyburski and Ondrej Vlcek.
June 2008
National League
Portsmouth ladies competed in National League Div 2 and began the season from Sept - Dec 07 very strong. Complacency then seemed to set-in and the team lost their way loosing several matches in a row, although the team never gave up they worked hard a training. Their game and performace picked up but too late in the seaon, which resulted in them finished seventh in the league. The team however and still working hard and are determined to gain entry back into Division 1 next season.
May 2008
Local League
Portsmouth entered both a mens and ladies teams for the local league this year for the first time for years - both teams played very well with the end of the season the ladies winning their league and the men finishing second.
The mens team which had only formed in September, had an especially hard start as they had no training venue and getting to know each other was carried out at the matches themselves. Players consisted from several countries including Germany, Poland, Czech & England, they played 18 matches, winning 14 and losing only 4. Training started in February and the team have gone from strength to strength as a result.
The ladies had a slightly easier start having been training together for a few years, it was also an ideal opportunity for the non-national league players to play competitively. The local league team was coached by Carol Blagg who did an excellant job of keeping the team together which lead to playing 10 games, winning 8, losing 1 and drawing 1, a very good first season.
As a result of their finishing places in the local league they became eligible for the SEVA Cup competition which was held on 11 May in Portsmouth. The ladies won all four matches in their division only being pipped for first place due to points difference, which put them into second place. They then met Southampton University for the third/fourth play-off which they won 2-0. The men had a harder draw finishing fourth but again due to points didn't get into the play-offs, but a great learning curve for them - they now know what level the SEVA Cup is.
Ladies Team Celine Guitteny, Emma Hopping, Lucy Wells, Silvia Sachsenhauser, Martyne Piszczek, Marion Haffreingue, Tracy Cleeve, Natalie Jutkiewicz, Nicole Street, Sharon Makepiece, Daniel Warren.
Mens Team Steve Metheral, Rob Attwood, Frank Will, Ross Franklin, Ondrej Vicek, Woitex Tyburski, Thorsten Grothe, Robert Suessspeck

Volleyball Club receives Lottery Grant

It is hard to believe that just over 18 months ago Portsmouth Volleyball Club was on the brink of folding. With just a handfull of players left and who were willing to commit to the next years Ladies National League - a tough decision had to be made. But, these remaining players refused to let the club go down without a fight, so a recruitment campaign for new players started.
Now in 2008 the club has survived and is going from strength to strength, with a convincing win at the National Shield Finals and being short listed for 'The News' Team of the year (a local paper). The club now boasts 12 registered (Women) National League players, and although going from Division 1 to 2, this allows the club time to rebuild the team. But, more was still to come, with a renewed focus on not just keeping the club going, but, also on active promotion and growth.
The philosophy behind the clubs plans was to promote youth sport in the Portsmouth and surrounding area, this has seen the club receive much support. Barclays Bank have provided the club with equipment for the juniors and Portsmouth City Council has given financial backing. However, a big boost to the clubs plans has come from the National Lottery who have presented the club with £9350 for their future development. Funds which are warmly welcomed to help set up the youth training sessions, and help promote the club to a wider audience, also helping adults get back to sport in the local area.
