Pre Season Friendly:
In a warm up for the season Portsmouth hosted Wessex at Priory School on Saturday 19 Sept. Wessex play in NVL Div 2 so they are a league higher than Portsmouth and so this game was a good indicator of how ready the club are for the new season.
Portsmouth were slow out of the blocks as a well practiced Wessex side stormed to a big lead in the first set, although Portsmouth clawed some points back they were not enough as Wessex claimed the first set easily.
A more relaxed Portsmouth countered in the second set and started to play some volleyball of their own, despite letting a healthy lead slip they held on to capture the second set and level the game at 1 - 1, a key part of this set was the aggressive serving from Steve Metheral.
Winning the second set seemed to suprise the Portsmouth team and allowed Wessex to storm into a 9 - 1 early lead in the third set. It seemed destined to be a fast set but some resolute hitting from Maciej Kubis helped drag the Portsmouth side into the set. Unfortunately Wessex held on to take the lead for the second time 1 - 2.
In a Jekyll and Hydr performance, Portsmouth were transformed in the fourth set and had good defensive work setting up some impressive attacking play. Of particular note was Matt Rogers on debut as Libero. Portsmouth comfortably dictated the set to force a decider 2 - 2.
The deciding set was in stark contrast to the previous four sets with closely contested points and neither side able to get really clear, the set lurched to 14 - 14 but unfortunately a lack of composure cost Portsmouth and Wessex were able to prevail 2 - 3.
It was a good game and a very tight contetst, there is definitely room for improvement in the side but as a first outing it was very promising against higher level opposition. Following the game both teams travelled to Gunwharf Quays for post match hospitality.
