Portsmouth Junior volleyball squad travelled to Dorking in Surrey for the junior outdoor tournament.
The club had entered 2 teams into theunder 14 age category, even though some of the players were aged between 9 and 14.
Both teams were drawn in the same pool, team 1 consisted of Harry Stokes, Philip & Michael West, Greta Lemeliauskaite and Elvis Anderson, team 2 were Sam & Josh Green, Maria Chirita, Annas Khalil and Adrian Jarych.
Both teams played against Bexley Dingos and Reading Aces and won both games each. The teams then faced each other and a great game was fought out, Portsmouth 1 coming out as winners 43 - 39 before time ran out.
With Bexley beating Reading, it went down to points, Portsmouth 1 going through to the final with Bexley, and Portsmouth 2 meeting Reading for the 3rd place position.
The final saw Portsmouth 1 taking a small lead, but Bexley kept fighting back, the clock was ticking and the teams remained level when time ran out. Bexley had to serve 1 more point, but with a great pass and an attack from Harry, Portsmouth won the point and won the game taking home the trophy.
Portsmouth 2 had to face Reading in the 3rd/4th play off, however they were unable to repeat the earlier win, even with an ace jumps serve from Sam Green, Reading took the 3rd place position.
It was another great day for Portsmouth Juniors, who have been working all season together and are now looking forward to playing in Portsmouth Local League in September which will alow them to face better teams and take them to the next level of the game. Training starts at Priory School on Saturday 11 September at 1230, all juniors between 8 and 16 welcome to come along and have a go.

The Portsmouth Juniors went to their first outdoor volleyball tournament ever and what a success it was!. It was a beautiful sunny day which does make a change from previous years!
We took 4 teams to the Ashcombe Tournament in Dorking on Satuday 27th June, 2 girls and 2 boys teams.
The girls team entered in the under 11 section but found out thay they had been placed into the under 14 division due to lack of other enteries. The girls were coached by Head Coach Jayne Sharpe.
The first team were the Portsmouth Terriers which were Laura Smith (9) and Caitlain Colligan (10), the second team called Portsmouth Girls were Abbie Pillans, Maria Chirita & Naomi Vandongen (all 9 year olds). Both teams were in the same pool and played against Herts Junioors who were 12 year olds and Ashcombe Brazil who were 13/14 year olds.
The teams then played against each other which was really good fun. All 5 girls played brilliantly and really worked well in their teams. The Terriers won the Portsmoputh Derby, which put them in third place and the girls in fourth place. They then had an extra match which was for 3rd/4th places and again the Terriers came out as winners.
The boys teams were the Portsmouth Rouges who played in the under 12 division and consisted of Michael West, Dan Curvey, Sam Phillans and Annas Khalil, these were coached by Jack Smith.
The Rouges played the Bling Boys, Sheaf Brothers and the Midgets, winning against the Midgets, this took them in to 3rd place and played the Bling Boys again for the 3rd place playoff - the Rouges came out winners
The second boys team were the Portsmouth Lads coached by Rob Attwood and consisted of Sam Green, Harry Stokes, Philip West and Jake Phillans. They had 5 games to play, but, played against teams that had played together several times before and although they did not win any games, they were fabulous in their team play and got better in every game they played.
All the kids really enjoyed themselves and the club is very proud of all of them and would like to thank them for their good team spirit and also the parents that also came up to watch and give support and help in the smooth running of the teams.
All the teams can only get better now they know what they can achieve if they train hard but keep enjoying the game.
